3-way valved to create outside zones

A brass 3-way diverter valve can be used outside to create two zones. The handle controls which way the water travels, it either goes to the left or right hand side.  While more expensive than plastic ball valves, the advantage to these is that you can never shut off both sides at the same time, it is always either/or, so there is no danger of damaging the washing machine pump.
