- In January 2011 I started a business called Village Water Services with my business partner, Peter van Vliet. He brings expertise as a Certified Environmental Technician with Wastewater and Small Water Systems certificates, and is a licensed Carpenter living on Wolfe Island. I have years of teaching experience at a community bike shop and my own screenprinting company. I am a certified by Graywater Action as an installer. I have installed composting toilets, solar domestic hot water heating systems, and work part time on an organic CSA farm on Howe Island. I am a self-taught DIY plumbing, rainwater, and greywater (that's the canadian spelling!) expert in Kingston. Both Peter and I have been passionate about protecting our watersheds and promoting sustainable water choices for years now, and coming together to realize our common dreams is making even more sense now that the Ontario Building Code in 2011 will allow for even more liberal applications for both RWH (Rain Water Harvest - subsurface, laundry, and toilet re-use) and GW (Grey Water - subsurface, toilet re-use) systems. We started this business to help people in rural areas around Kingston, Ontario deal with water supply and disposal issues, for example, on Wolfe Island there is a growing population but no centralized water treatment, and many homeowners have been using Rainwater as their primary water source since their homes were built decades ago but have not upgraded their systems with modern innovations, for instance pre-treatment devices such as Leaf Eaters or first flush systems. We will be doing professional audits to help homeowners (and renters) identify areas where they can save money on costs associated with water, or improve the safety and effectiveness of their rainwater harvesting systems. We will also provide large capacity rainwater systems and greywater systems for subsurface irrigation or fixture re-use, making the most of all resources available on each lot, big or small. We will do workshops on water efficient fixtures, RWH and GW systems, both at the local college and in the small villages with water issues around Kingston, as well as for the environmentally minded leaders in our community. We'll also be working with landlords to access the Utilities Kingston rebate of $65-$125 per toilet and encouraging other low-cost measures like aerators and efficient washing machines. Keep an eye out on our website for our online water audit, and feel free to email us with any questions or ideas!
